Professional teeth whitening: the basics

A brighter smile is one of the most popular wishes we hear. Here are the basics of professional teeth whitening, so you can decide whether it is right for you.

What is professional whitening?

Professional whitening is carried out by a trained specialist, who uses products and methods designed for use in a clinic. It lightens the natural colour of your teeth. It does not change the colour of crowns, veneers or fillings.

Is it right for me?

A consultation comes first. Your specialist will look at your teeth and gums and ask about your history. In some cases, for example when there are cavities or gum problems, it may be better to see a dentist first. Tell us if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, if you have sensitive teeth or if you have any dental work.

How a visit usually goes

  • Your specialist checks the starting shade and protects your gums and lips.
  • The whitening product is applied and left for the planned time.
  • The shade is checked again, and you will get advice for the following days.

Looking after your smile afterwards

  • Teeth can feel a little sensitive for a short while. Let your specialist know if this bothers you.
  • For the first day or two it is usually advised to avoid strongly coloured food and drinks, such as coffee, tea, red wine and berries, and to avoid smoking.
  • Keep up a good routine of brushing twice a day, cleaning between your teeth and regular dental check-ups.

What to keep in mind

The result depends on your natural tooth colour and your daily habits, and it is not the same for everyone. Whitening is not permanent, and you can discuss with your specialist how to keep your smile looking fresh.

General information only, not medical advice. Your specialist will advise you individually at the clinic.
